British economy to see 610,000 new job roles by 2028 thanks to AI, with IT sector to boom according to ServiceNow

New roles to include an additional 320,000 jobs created in technologies such as AI, ServiceNow and Pearson research finds

Workers can save up to 12.6 hours per week, with efficiencies driving time gains equivalent to 2.88 million full-time roles

ServiceNow, the AI platform for business transformation, has revealed research predicting that the AI revolution will drive new job growth in the UK, particularly in tech-related roles. The new research, conducted with workforce specialists Pearson in multiple countries, predicts overall job growth in most developed economies, with the UK seeing demand for 610,000 new roles by 2028.

ServiceNow worked with Pearson data scientists to use machine learning algorithms to mine data from labour market sources, and found the impact will vary across sectors. Roles created in the UK by 2029 will include: 320,000 roles in telecommunications, media and tech; 190,000 in education; and 90,000 in healthcare. By contrast, the retail industry will see headcount drop 240,000 by 2028, with declines also seen in manufacturing (90,000) and financial services (50,000).

Damian Stirrett, Group Vice President & General Manager UK & Ireland said: “AI is set to galvanise job growth in the UK, a pattern we are also seeing in other advanced economies. Like other technologies before it, on one hand AI will disrupt the workforce, and on the other, create a net-positive gain in employment. Sectors are however facing a decline, a clear sign that employers and governments need to help workers reskill and switch industries.”

Workers in the tech sector will benefit from AI-driven efficiencies, with system administrators gaining up to 12.6 hours per week due to emerging technologies. Across the economy, time equivalent to 2.88 million full-time roles will be saved thanks to AI efficiencies.

There will also be a shift with 400,000 new roles created to implement and maintain emerging technologies, including AI. As part of this, computer and information systems managers will be in highest demand, with 27,200 new roles, alongside developers (20,800) and data engineers (9,400). Financial services will see growth in data scientists and related roles, and a drop in demand for data analysts (2,300).

The UK is set to see growth in telecoms media and tech second only to the U.S. worldwide. Globally, the research found that a small number of countries such as Germany and Japan will see workforces contract, likely due to ageing populations, but most will grow. The United States is forecast to add a million roles by 2028, and emerging economies such as India will see strong growth, with up to 34 million new roles.

Methodology

The study was commissioned by ServiceNow, the leading digital workflow company, in partnership with workforce data experts Pearson. Pearson data scientists used machine learning algorithms to mine data from labour market data sources including census data, job data and other sources. The research looked at 1,400 occupations, breaking them into 5,600 job functions and 80,000 tasks in Australia, Canada, Germany, India, Japan, Singapore, the UK and the United States.
