Cyber security or cyber recovery? comment by Mark Nutt, Senior Vice President of International Sales at Veritas Technologies

“With the NIS2 directive deadline almost here, it’s no longer only essential, but legally enforceable that businesses uphold a standard of cyber resilience. For UK businesses that trade in the EU, this means that they will have to uphold the same levels of cybersecurity as laid out by the EU.

“One requirement of NIS2 is that businesses have comprehensive plans in place for responding to and recovering from cyber incidents, yet worryingly over a third of organisations don’t currently have complete cyber recovery plans in place should a successful attack take place.

“Bad actors are using AI tools to access data through employees, so AI driven recoverability and data security, identifying unusual access behaviour, is now a key component to any business resiliency strategy, and cyber security team. To ensure compliancy with NIS2 and minimising the impact of incidents, businesses must be able to comprehensively report breaches and actions taken, which requires accurate and accelerated data management.  Detailed recovery plans must also be in place to allow for business continuity, when that inevitable breach takes place.

“Here are the steps businesses can take to enhancing cyber recovery strategies:
  • Comprehensive Data Protection: Backup and recovery solutions ensure critical data is protected and available.
  • Rapid Incident Recovery: To enable essential services following a breech, ensure fast recovery of systems and data, minimizing downtime and disruption after a cyberattack.
  • Automated and Secure Backups: To comply with NIS2’s requirement for secure data storage and risk mitigation throughout the supply chain, enable automated, regular backups and encryption of backup data.
  • Resilience and Risk Management: Test recovery capabilities regularly, ensuring preparedness for future threats – key elements of NIS2’s risk management requirements.
  • Compliance and Incident Reporting: Review audit trails and reporting capabilities, to demonstrate compliance with NIS2 and that effective incident recovery measures are in place.”
