FDM’s SheLivesTech Bootcamp and Female Talent Campaign Celebrate Diversity on International Women’s Day

FDM Group, a global business and tech consultancy, is celebrating International Women’s Day with their SheLivesTech bootcamp, and Female Talent Campaign, to encourage women to enter the technology industry.

Currently, women make up only 26 percent of the workforce. The gender gap begins early, evidenced by merely 35 percent of girls opting for STEM subjects after their GCSEs, and just 25 percent continuing with them at the university level. FDM Group is dedicated to creating fulfilling career opportunities for diverse groups in tech.

On March 6th, FDM hosted their ‘Inspiring an Inclusive Workforce’ event. The session featured panel discussions and fireside chats focusing on supporting women across all stages of their careers – from students about to start their first jobs to working mothers, caregivers, and women going through menopause. FDM’s Kate Hawthorn joined the panel to explore both the progress made in creating inclusive workplaces, and the ongoing challenges.

Building on last year’s successful SheLivesTech bootcamp, in 2024 FDM organised three virtual sessions over the months of February and March. This aimed to jump-start a career in tech for all and help close the gender gap in the technology sector, with insight into the world of coding and web development.

The bootcamp culminated in a Showcase Day on 6 March, where candidates pitched their ideas and showcased web projects at FDM centres in London, Leeds and Glasgow.

This coincides with FDM’s focus on empowering young women to pursue higher education and careers in STEM to create a multigenerational workforce of women in tech.

Research shows that seven out of ten organisations think multigenerational workforces are very important for their success. However, considering that over a third of individuals aged 50-69 feel disadvantaged in job applications due to age, FDM aims to change this narrative.

Kate Hawthorn, Director Consultant Talent, FDM Group, said: “Encouraging young people to enter the technology industry is vital, especially amid rapid technological developments in the digital age. International Women’s Day offers a timely reminder to encourage the next generation of women to learn digital skills and achieve more representation for women in the tech industry. Technology should drive business and innovation, but also social change, and at FDM we are delighted to deliver the SheLivesTech Bootcamp to help reduce the gender divide in tech.”

Sheila Flavell CBE, COO of FDM Group, said: “The gender gap in tech isn’t something that can be solved overnight, but every single programme, every bit of support and every teaching moment contributes to bridging the gap. Across the UK, we must consistently aim for better representation in the technology industry.”

“The SheLivesTech bootcamp presents a chance to do just that- helping young girls make a jump start in the technology sector. These sessions seek to provide a chance to learn about the tech industry and to challenge stereotypes that hinder capable young women from pursuing careers in this exciting field.”
