Toshiba Tec takes action against plastic pollution through new collaboration with CleanHub

Grounded by a commitment to sustainability, Toshiba Tec has announced an exciting new partnership with CleanHub: a company dedicated to collecting mismanaged waste and preventing it from entering oceans in plastic pollution hotspots across the world.

The Toshiba Group continually strives to lower its environmental impact through activities and initiatives that promote circularity and social good. As far as corporate philosophies go, “Committed to People, Committed to the Future,” extends into every facet of the business. Global companies have a responsibility to address the social and environmental challenges confronting the world today, and for Toshiba, innovation and sustainability are key to achieving this.

Toshiba’s commitment to fostering a more sustainable society goes beyond mere conversation or clichéd mission statements. The company is dedicated to taking meaningful steps towards achieving this goal. While this is no easy feat, Toshiba’s Environmental Future Vision 2050 provides a clear roadmap to make it a reality.

A Shared Vision for the Future

Toshiba’s Environmental Vision, a vision that reinforces its corporate social responsibility and envisages lifestyles in harmony with the earth, is centred around a few core objectives: responding to climate change, responding to the circular economy, and always in consideration of ecosystems.

Thanks to a new partnership, it looks like Toshiba can tackle all three. Enter CleanHub, an innovative company that knows a thing or two about turning commitment into action. Its philosophy is simple: life is best lived on a clean planet.

Founders Joel Tasche and Florin Dinga resolved to dedicate themselves to building a collective solution to the plastic problem by connecting people in coastal communities to waste collection, creating safe and dignified jobs with fair pay and opportunities.

More than 2 billion people1 worldwide dispose of their trash in nature because there are no waste collection services. Therein lies the company’s mission: to put a ‘CleanHub’ in every coastal community that doesn’t have proper waste management, meaning people everywhere can have their trash collected and managed in a safe, dignified way.

Toshiba’s European-wide initiative with Clean Hub breathes new life into its sustainability efforts. Not only does it aim to make a positive impact on the planet by helping to protect ecosystems, but it also helps to conserve the Earth’s resources by feeding collected plastic back into the economy.

The consequences of excessive plastic use are far-reaching, literally. Some of the biggest plastic polluting hotspots in the world are in South and Southeast Asia, where waste is either openly burned, dumped, or piled onto poorly managed landfills before eventually making its way into nature.

These areas simply don’t have the waste management infrastructures to cope with the worsening plastic crisis, which is where CleanHub comes in. With Clean Hubs worldwide, Toshiba’s partnership is helping to fund 6 of them; 2 in Indonesia, and 4 in India.

Toshiba’s contribution to CleanHub is based on a yearly collection goal of 116,279 kilograms (kg) of plastic waste. Reaching that target will take about 3,059 hours of work for the waste collectors, many of whom are among the poorest and most marginalised in their communities.

They play a pivotal role in solving the plastic problem, which is why CleanHub provides them with fair pay as well as development opportunities. For Toshiba, maximising the benefits of the initiative with a direct social impact is an important aspect of its new partnership.

Sarah Kochli, Head of Marketing at Toshiba Tec UK emphasises the company’s dedication to environmental and social responsibility. “By supporting CleanHub, Toshiba is not only protecting our oceans and environment from plastic waste but also playing a part in the well-being and futures of collection teams on the ground, who benefit from safe and dignified jobs with CleanHub. It’s a really rewarding initiative to be a part of.”

Tracking the impact

In pursuing this initiative, it was important for Toshiba that its impact would be transparent. Toshiba is committed to partnering with companies that recognise the importance of genuine and verifiable actions. CleanHub stands out in this regard, ensuring total transparency over all waste collections, and allowing Toshiba to track its impact.

Much like Toshiba, CleanHub is leveraging the power of technology to solve problems. CleanHub’s tracking technology2 verifies every kilogram of waste on its journey from collection through to processing, offering real-time data of the impact. What’s more, it’s the first ever plastic credit system to be verified by industry leaders in auditing environmental impact, TÜV SÜD3.

For Toshiba, this certification provides assurance that its partnership with CleanHub is authentic, transparent, and trustworthy, reinforcing its commitment to plastic recovery efforts.

Toshiba Tec’s partnership with CleanHub exemplifies the company’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. By addressing plastic pollution and supporting waste collection teams, Toshiba is making a tangible impact on the environment and communities.

The collaboration, underpinned by transparency and verified by TÜV SÜD ISO certification, ensures that Toshiba’s efforts are credible and effective. This initiative not only aligns with Toshiba’s Environmental Future Vision 2050 but also sets a benchmark for corporate responsibility in tackling global environmental challenges.
